SHAVING BRUSH 101
MEET YOUR SHAVING BRUSH
Using a shaving brush can be a game-changer for your shaving routine. A good shaving brush is an essential tool for creating a rich, creamy lather that lifts hair and provides a comfortable shave. Shaving brushes come in various shapes, sizes, and materials, each offering unique features and benefits. We will explore different types of shaving brushes, their pros and cons, and how to choose the right one for you!
TYPES OF BRISTLES
BADGER
Badger Hair has been the standard bristle type for many years. This is due to their ability to absorb water to create rich later and their overall quality. There are three grades of badger hair to take note of. Pure Badger is the stiffest cut, ideal for those who have thicker growth. This grade tends to be the least expensive. Best Badger is a softer, yet more dense cut resulting in great water absorption for lathering. This moderately priced grade is a favorite for most. Silvertip Badger is considered the softest and highest grade. Their absorption is comparable to Best Badger, however this grade commands the highest price.
BOAR
Boar bristle shaving brushes are affordable, but they present some of the stiffest grades available. Their rigidity requires a pre-soak before use and most users note the bristles need a “break in” period. Boar bristle users generally have thicker, tougher growth and enjoy boars’ ability to easily lift hair for thorough lather application.
SYNTHETIC
Over the years, high-quality synthetic bristles have come to market, leaving environmentally conscious wet shavers a solution for animal-free shaving brushes without compromise. They generally offer a balance of softness and rigidity- gentle on skin, tough enough to whip up a thick lather. Some research may be required to ensure you are purchasing a quality synthetic. We recommend these brushes for beginners or those looking for a lower maintenance brush.
HANDLE MATERIALS
RESIN
Resin handles are common options as they are not porous and are low maintenance. High grade resin handles are crafted in solid molds, resulting in no seam. Most resin handles stay secure in the hand during use.
METAL
Metal handles present a heavier weight preferred by those with larger hands. Stainless Steel is most common, and they usually feature a knurled pattern for secure grip in wet environments. This material is low maintenance, but it is best to wipe dry after use.
NATURAL
The most popular natural handle materials are wood or animal horn. Their weight can vary greatly, but they overall present an aesthetically pleasing option. Their cost and maintenance are the highest amongst handle options.

RINSE AFTER EACH USE
Once your routine is done, thoroughly rinse the brush under warm water. Be sure to remove all lather to prevent build up.
SHAKE OUT EXCESS WATER
With bristles facing down, shake the brush over the sink. This will help remove excess water, allowing your brush to dry quicker and prevent damage.
STORE ON A SHAVING STAND
Shaving Brushes should always be stored with the bristles facing down. This allows any water to drain downward, protecting the base of the knot and handle.
STORE IN AREA WITH GOOD AIRFLOW
Storing your brush on a stand placed on your bathroom counter is recommended. Do not store your brush inside cabinets as airflow will be restricted and the bristles may not dry.
